The Mug-loan Project’s purpose is to establish a system that will promote and increase the use of re-usable mugs at Concordia University. As disposable cups are related to an industry that promote unsustainable single use practices, and the Hug-A-Mug campaign (designed to curb this practice) was an ongoing effort between the CSU and Sustainable Concordia’s R4 working group. R4 has estimated that the 3.4 million single use cups disposed of on campus equal a total cost of $300,000-$600,000 ($0.10-$0.20 per cup) annually with about $7,000 going strictly to the disposable of said cups.

The main goal of this project was to reduce the consumption of single use coffee cups. The larger goal was to begin a phase out of non-compostable cups from campus, later to remove all one-time use cups from campus as the loan project grows.
