The Bionic Knee is a multidisciplinary engineering project developed by Biomedical Club Concordia for the 2025–2026 True North Biomedical Competition. The project focuses on a smart, wearable orthopedic sleeve that uses surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors and magnetic rotary encoders to provide real-time data on muscle activation and knee movement during ACL rehabilitation.
The device acts as a rehabilitation “co-pilot,” transmitting data via Bluetooth to a custom mobile dashboard. Its Symmetry Index Engine compares the injured and healthy legs to provide a measurable deficit percentage, helping support informed and safer return-to-sport decisions.
Led by Concordia University engineering students specializing in mechanical design, electrical systems, and software development, the project also addresses health equity and sustainability by exploring a portable, low-cost alternative to expensive clinical assessment tools and incorporating a durable, reusable design.
