PERVERTS is a queer and woman led short film that includes a team of current Concordia students, alumni, as well as community members coming together to make a low-environmental-impact film project. The film is comedic in nature, centering queer joy and radical silliness, as integral to the plot and experience in making the film. The film is absurd and follows a pair of perverse siblings on a quest to find love with two handsome buskers. It will be shot on camcorders and have a grimey aesthetic.
This project will give a 20 person cast and crew a space to play and explore creatively, tapping into queer discourse around sex and bodies. Above all, the purpose is to have fun, something so crucial in this current political climate for our community. This film set will be a safe space free from prejudice, where young women and queer creatives can let their creativity run wild without oppression.
Given today’s political climate, where conservatism is on the rise — supporting oppressive values towards queer people and women — we believe that creating dialogue against this is crucial. In a contemporary context, queerness is being reduced to palatable means of expression (see: Queer Eye). Given queer assimilation into heteronormative society, PERVERTS represents a commitment to queer deviance: “Sexual deviance” as a means of expression and survival.
The goal is to create a 15 minute comedy film that will play at film festivals, film screenings, and queer spaces. Furthermore, the process of making this short film will be close to zero-waste, integral to our ethos as filmmakers. The set will be constructed in a way that champions sustainability, using entirely repurposed and found materials. These items will be sourced from CUCCR, personal collections, as well as the garbage. Sustainable, low-impact filmmaking is the only way to make politically charged projects, while PERVERTS may be a silly, fun concept, we take our roles as activists seriously.
