Hive Free Dinners & Grocery Program

The Hive Free Breakfast, Lunch, and Grocery Programs at Concordia’s Loyola campus exist to ensure that no student has to choose between paying for food and paying for tuition. Our mission is simple yet ambitious: to eliminate food insecurity on campus by providing reliable, nutritious, and dignified access to food for all Concordia students.
Currently, our free meal program serves thousands of meals to students every week, offering two free meals per day—breakfast and lunch—without any barriers to access. However, demand continues to grow, and our current budget cannot keep up. While we were able to secure funding for a temporary free dinner program, all of our meal and grocery programs are stretched extremely thin. The rising cost of groceries, coupled with the increasing number of food-insecure students, has placed significant strain on our resources. This proposal seeks funding support from the Sustainability Action Fund (SAF) to strengthen and expand our capacity to feed our community through three key initiatives: enhanced meal program funding, a strengthened free grocery program, and improved outreach and infrastructure.
The first component of this project will allocate $2,000 to groceries for the meal programs (breakfast, lunch and dinner), directly supporting our ability to keep up with increased student demand. This funding will ensure that we can continue serving fresh, balanced, and inclusive meals that reflect our commitment to sustainability, cultural diversity, and accessibility.
The second component will dedicate $2500 to the Free Grocery Program, which provides weekly take-home groceries to students in need. This program currently operates on a limited budget of $200 per week for 22 weeks—far below what is needed to meet student demand or offer high-quality, diverse options. This additional funding will allow us to purchase greater quantities of essential foods—fresh produce, proteins, and pantry staples—and ensure that students can rely on this service as a stable and dignified food source.
The third component will invest $250 in equipment for grocery distribution, including compostable paper bags and containers for taking home items like carrots, potatoes, and green beans. This will improve our efficiency and sustainability, minimizing food waste and ensuring that produce is handled safely and responsibly. This will of course help students to take home more groceries.
Finally, $500 will be used for outreach and marketing, allowing us to expand our presence on campus through posters, social media, and tabling events. The goal is to ensure that every student who needs food support knows that the Hive is here for them—free, accessible, and welcoming.
The forecasted results of this project include increased student access to free, healthy food; a measurable reduction in food insecurity at Loyola; and a more sustainable, community-oriented campus culture. By reducing hunger, we support not only student well-being but also academic success, social connection, and mental health.
Our long-term ambition is nothing short of historic: to become among the first Canadian university campuses to guarantee every student free breakfast, lunch and dinner, alongside weekly groceries, as a permanent, campus-wide service. With your support, the Hive Free Meal program at Concordia will blaze the trail — creating a model of food security that higher education institutions across Canada will look to replicate, and making hunger a thing of the past.
Sustainability was central to the production. Filming took place within a 1.5 km radius to minimize transportation emissions, and most scenes were captured outdoors using natural light to reduce energy consumption. Costumes were thrifted, equipment was rented, and props were created by repurposing already owned items. The crew also prioritized waste reduction and the use of reusable materials, embracing environmentally conscious filmmaking practices that reflect the values of a new generation of storytellers.
The purpose of Adam, Eve & Me is to explore the internal and external struggles of young adults searching for identity and connection in an unfamiliar environment. By focusing on the experience of international students, the film highlights a smaller yet deeply relatable demographic—those who leave home to navigate a new culture, language, and way of life. Through Zoé’s fantastical journey, the film captures the emotional turbulence of self-discovery, loneliness, and adaptation, while offering moments of humor and joy. We want audiences to laugh, reflect, and leave with something meaningful—to recognize themselves in Zoé’s uncertainty and courage.
Ultimately, Adam, Eve & Me aims to resonate with “the Zoés of the world,” reminding them that it is okay to be uncertain, to still be figuring things out, and to not have all the answers. By blending elements of surreal fantasy with emotional realism, the film offers a fresh perspective on identity and belonging in today’s multicultural society. It celebrates difference as a source of understanding rather than division, and encourages viewers to see themselves—and others—through a more compassionate lens.
