Cinema Politica Fall 2025 Screenings: Sustainability & Justice

Cinema Politica Concordia: Fall 2025 Sustainability & Justice Screenings is a student-led series of three documentary screenings and discussions that engage Concordia students and the wider community in critical conversations about environmental and social sustainability. Each event examines a different facet of justice and collective action, using cinema as a tool for education, dialogue, and community building. These three screenings are part of our wider Fall program, which also included films on Indigenous struggles, student activism, and SWANA uprisings—positioning the series within a semester-long learning arc.

We are applying to SAF for support for the following events: URBAN DISOBEDIENCE TOOLKIT: an exploration of collective urban interventions that reclaim public space and inspire sustainable city-making. PARADE: an archival documentary celebrating intergenerational 2SLGBTQI+ activism, linking struggles for gender and sexual equity to broader movements for social and ecological transformation. THE WHITE HOUSE EFFECT: an investigation into how fossil-fuel lobbying and political decisions shaped decades of climate inaction, underscoring the urgent need for environmental justice and transparent governance.

Across the series, students encounter international and local perspectives on sustainability, activism, and intersectional justice. Screenings are followed by moderated discussions or Q&As (online or in person) with filmmakers and guest speakers whose work connects directly to the themes, offering practical insights into political storytelling, organizing, and community resilience. For each screening we collaborate with on-campus and off-campus groups, offering tabling and mic time so partners can share resources and pathways for involvement. For these three events, planned partners include Climate Justice Montreal, Metonymy Press, Brique par Brique, the Social Justice Centre (Concordia), Queer Concordia, and others. This partnership model strengthens community building, amplifies student leadership, and ensures the project’s benefits extend beyond the screening room. We expect strong attendance and engagement across the three events, with outcomes including: increased awareness of the social dimensions of sustainability; connections between students and community organizations; and the seeding of new student-led initiatives. Impact will be measured through attendance counts, as well as audience, volunteer and partner feedback surveys.

The series integrates sustainability in both content and process: accessible campus venue; inclusive moderation; paper-light promotion; and (where applicable) refreshments from socially and environmentally responsible sources. Costs align with SAF eligibility (screening licenses, essential honoraria for speakers, outreach materials), with no airfare requested. Our events turn weekly film culture into an inclusive, action-oriented learning space; offering to Concordia students knowledge, networks and motivation to advance sustainability and justice on campus and beyond.
