Collective 4891 2025-26 Zine Project

Collective 4891’s fourth zine project turns its focus toward the futures that are possible through collective solidarity and action. Believing that dreaming of a better world is part of the work, this publication strives to encourage the imagination, creativity, and hope required to build and sustain systems that better serve our communities in the face of injustice and violence. We therefore invite artists to explore and envision desired futures, creative disruptions, and radical re-thinkings of reality in their submissions. We see artists, especially those often left out of mainstream narratives, as essential storytellers whose work nurtures connection, fosters collective memory, and brings joy while questioning dominant dynamics and offering alternative ways of seeing and being. By accepting works that range from poetry and prose to visual art and photography, we welcome students and other members of the community to take part in the radical healing of collective art-making while also providing opportunities for (often first-time) publishing and exhibiting, as well as mentorship and guidance. This zine offers a low-barrier entry point for emerging artists with limited or no professional experience to gain visibility, confidence, and compensation for their creative labour. Furthermore, we prioritize the empowerment of underrepresented and marginalized artists, and seek in particular to publish immigrant and refugee voices in this edition of the zine. The project will culminate in a launch event, where submitted works will be exhibited and shared publicly through readings or presentations. In addition, print and/or digital copies of the zine will be distributed in exchange for donation receipts to local organizations as a further effort to cultivate our values of community care and mutual aid. We aim to publish 14-20 contributors, print 100 copies of the zine, and raise $1,000 in donations, continuing our track record of redistributing funds to social justice and mutual aid efforts in Montréal. Further, we expect approximately 60-70 attendees at the event, creating space for connection, creative exchange, and community-building. By combining artistic expression, social engagement, and redistributive practices, this project contributes to a broader culture of sustainability at Concordia and the broader Montréal community; one that values justice, social change, community resilience, and the empowerment of underrepresented artists.
